Weekend lockdown in Karnataka: what is allowed, what is not

In addition to extending the pre-existing nighttime curfew in Karnataka (now 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.), the state government has added a weekend curfew to combat Covid-19. As the virus rises, forcing governments to take big action, we urge our readers to be extra careful and only come out when necessary. In a time like this, your health is the biggest asset.

Meanwhile, across Karnataka, the new lockdown guidelines will take effect from 9 p.m. on April 21 to 6 a.m. on May 4 until further notice. People are not allowed to go out during curfew, except for emergencies / essential activities.

Here’s a look at what’s allowed and what’s not during the weekend lockdown:

If I am a government employee and / or involved in essential services, can I go to work?

Yes, state / central government employees and their autonomous bodies involved in essential Covid-19 services can move around without restriction. Those in industries and organizations requiring 24/7 operations and those deployed in essential services will be permitted to travel and will be required to provide valid identification documents issued by their employer.

Who is allowed out during the weekend lockdown?

Employees of telecommunications / internet service providers are permitted to travel on presentation of valid identification. Critical staff in IT / ITeS companies can work from the office, others need to work from home. People eligible for vaccination may move on presentation of minimum proof. Those traveling to and from the state can use public transport or private vehicles to get around, but must carry relevant proof such as tickets.

What if I have someone in intensive care or need to go to the hospital?

Patients and their assistants requiring essential travel are permitted to travel. Those in need of medical assistance can also go out. In a real emergency, people can go to a doctor or to hospitals. However, if a visit can be rushed for later, it is advisable to do so.

What if I have tickets booked during the weekend lockdown? Can I travel outside of Karnataka?

Yes, there is no ban on taking flights.

Will grocery stores and milk supplies remain open over the weekend?

Neighborhood grocery stores will have a four-hour window on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Online delivery of essential items is allowed throughout the lockdown.

Will Dunzo, Swiggy and Amazon be allowed to deliver?

Yes, food deliveries were allowed throughout the shutdown period. Restaurants will only be allowed for take-out.

Will liquor stores / bars / restaurants be open?

No, liquor stores, bars and restaurants will remain closed during the weekend lockdown. During the week, deliveries and take-out will be allowed from these. It is forbidden to meet, to dine in these spaces.

What about movie theaters, shopping malls, gyms and swimming pools?

All movie theaters, shopping malls, gymnasiums / yoga centers, spas, sports complexes, swimming pools, amusement parks, stadiums / playgrounds, theaters, bars and auditoriums, meeting rooms and similar places will remain closed during the four weekend days.

Are wedding ceremonies and funerals allowed?

These are permitted with a maximum capacity of 50 people for weddings and 20 for funerals and crematoriums, respectively. Those present must strictly follow Covid-19 standards.

What about religious gatherings? Will temples, churches, mosques and other religious places be open?

Gatherings of any kind are prohibited, including for religious purposes. Only staff involved in the service of the place of worship can perform their duties, without visitors.

Can construction activities be undertaken?

Construction work will not be permitted during the weekend shutdown.
